André Brasilier, Le Retour du soir, 2018, Oil on canvas, 60 x 92 cm
Infinite Inspiration showcases French artist André Brasilier’s works. The selection features a range of the artist’s representative artworks, including both emblematic earlier paintings and recent works, taking the viewer on a journey through the tranquil lyricism of his visual world.
One never tires of enjoying a painting by André Brasilier – the generous brushstrokes of vivid pinks, oranges, and indigos are layered upon with notes of bright yellow and green. Aspiring to ultimate simplicity, the artist retains only the essential elements of his subjects while expressing their full emotional quality. André Brasilier is truly an artist in the classical painterly tradition, and he would insist French at that, standing on the shoulders of giants such as Delacroix, Matisse and Rouault.
Brasilier found his signature style fairly early on in his career. His artistic evolution is not one of changes and disjunctions. His paintings developped over the years concurrently with reocurring themes and the artist’s maturing state of mind. His most loved themes that we see frequently are centered upon the world around him. We find in his work nature and his country house in Loupeigne, France with its forests and meadows. It is the home that the artist and his wife bought and restored over the years since the early days of their marriage, bearing marks of the passing of time and finding the essence of his art. We also find on his canvases beaches, spirited horses galloping through pastoral landscapes, music recitals and concerts. Last but not least, portraits of his beloved wife and muse, Chantal, are omnipresent. She is the lady in all of his paintings and the face of the angels he decorated the Sainte-Blaise Chapel (Arnac-Pompadour, France) with. Indeed, the artist insists that a painter should not forgo the importance of representing figures. Brasilier’s paintings are not only liberating but they still manage to capture the spirit of the subject matter whose reality remain tangible.
