Nature Portals is a captivating solo exhibition by American artist Anna Valdez (b. 1985, USA). Available to view now at the gallery, Valdez’s first showcase in Singapore, inviting viewers into her world of art history, life’s interconnectedness, and the depths of human experience.
Nature Portals delves into Valdez’s exploration of classical antiquities and folk-art traditions, juxtaposed with contemporary reinterpretations that defy conventional standards. The exhibition showcases a series of maximalist still-life paintings and ceramic works meticulously composed to engage viewers in a rich dialogue of visual abundance.
Drawing from the concept of the cabinet of curiosities (Wunderkammer), Valdez’s paintings present a modern twist on historical collections, featuring carefully selected objects and playful arrangements. Taxidermy birds, symbolizing human figures, add metaphorical depth, bridging connections between nature and the human condition with a touch of humour.
The artist weave together diverse cultural influences, connecting past and present in a vibrant dialogue. The integration of ceramics, textiles, and other art forms serves as a visual testament to the enduring power of artistic heritage.
Valdez’s fascination with 17th-century Dutch still-life paintings is evident in her vibrant depictions of seasonal flower bouquets and thriving houseplants, imbued with contemporary sentimentality on symbolic wealth. The exhibition reflects on the convergence of cultures in a globalised world.
