Art Day Out! – Gillman Barracks Saturday open house – will return in November, and is the art enclave’s last open house event for the year. This time round, the highlight is a joint Gillman Barracks galleries group show titled UNDER 20.
JOINT GALLERIES GROUP SHOW
At UNDER 20, each participating gallery will offer for sale a special selection of art works and merchandise including prints, photographs, drawings and books. UNDER 20 hopes to attract art enthusiasts and first time art buyers through more affordable price points and accessible mediums. Visitors can also expect films and other art encounters at this casual and informative event.
SPECIAL PROGRAMMES BY TENANTS AND PARTNERS
In addition to their new shows, Gillman Barracks’ tenants will also be organising special programmes for Art Day Out! NTU CCA Singapore will feature Jam Session #2, a live performance by arachnids and local artist Bani Haykal as part of public programming under its new exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Arachnid Orchestra. Jam Sessions. Under its Residencies: OPEN series, visitors can also explore studios of their artists-in-residence and participate in an artist workshop.
Yeo Workshop opens new exhibition This is the end… by Yu-Chen Wang with an artist talk, and new tenant Art Outreach will also organise a number of visitor engagement activities including a pantone twister game. Docents from the Friends of the Museums (FOM) will host a History & Heritage Tour that focuses on the Barracks’ evolution from a British military barracks in the 1936 to today’s art enclave of Singapore.
GUEST EXHIBITIONS IN NOVEMBER
For the month of November, Gillman Barracks welcomes its first exhibition by a guest gallery. ROH Projects, a Jakarta-based gallery will stage Effervescence, a group show of Indonesian artists. The show title emphasises new perspectives in contemporary painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and installations.
THEO Arts Professionals will also present the textile artworks of renowned designer Benny Ong in a special feature exhibition. Recently awarded the Golden Jubilee Award by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth for his many contributions to fashion, design, and now his cross-disciplinary textile art; Benny Ong was the first Singaporean to establish his brand in the fashion capital of London.
MUSIC, F&B AND RETAIL
In addition to the art offerings, there will be a mini design and book fair. Red Baron will also host a Jamaican-themed music and BBQ street party in collaboration with the Singapura Dub Club, while Timbre @ Gillman will hold a Pirates edition of its children-friendly Saturday Social BBQ.
