With a particular focus on modern aesthetic painting tradition, artcommune gallery handpicks and represents some of Singapore’s finest and most important artists: from revered pioneer masters Cheong Soo Pieng and Chen Wen Hsi to leading second-generation painters of different styles and fortes including Lim Tze Peng, Ong Kim Seng, Tan Choh Tee, Wong Keen and Yeo Hoe Koon.
Artcommune’s Art Stage Prelude from 14 to 19 January 2016 unveils the representing theme and artworks for our upcoming showcase at Art Stage, Singapore (21 – 24 January, Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre).
With 30 exhibits, including signature as well as rare quality works by our representing artists, the show features an evolving body of figurative work reflecting pioneer master Cheong Soo Pieng’s pictorial stylisation from the 1950s to the early 1980s; Lim Tze Peng’s exquisite ink paintings of Balinese scenes and modern colour calligraphy that breaks down traditional ideographic content between painting and writing; a rare abstract ink series by Chua Ek Kay; new premium watercolour works by Ong Kim Seng, including a huge Old Singapore scene measuring 119 x 140 cm; a still life diptych on Garlic by oil landscape maestro Tan Choh Tee, thought-provoking mixed media collage compositions by Singapore’s first Abstract Expressionist artist Wong Keen; lyrical abstract oil landscapes by Yeo Hoe Koon, and intriguing portrait and still life compositions by Tong Chin Sye.
This prelude showcase demonstrates a varying range of subject matters, styles and techniques; the amalgamation of East-West traditions and aesthetics also underline these Singapore artists’ preoccupation with dialogues and transformations in their expressions of Modern art since the 1940s to present.
