ArtScience on Screen: Adventures from Moominvalley

ArtScience on Screen is bringing some festive cheer to the Museum with a season-long screening of wintery themed episodes from Adventures from Moominvalley, the 1990-91 series that follows the magical quests of a young Moomin and his friends in the idyllic Moominvalley.

A Japanese-Finnish-Dutch production based on creator Tove Jansson’s Moomin novels and comic strips, Adventures from Moominvalley is also the third anime adaptation that was said to be Jansson’s favourite version.

Episode 21: Snufkin leaves Moominvalley (22 min)
Winter is again at the door and Moominpappa and Moomin are collecting wood to keep the house warm during their long hibernation. Moomin is feeling very sad because it is time for Snufkin to go away on his long annual trip, but Snorkmaiden manages to bring him out of his gloom by showing him something very, very special.

Episode 22: Moomin and Little My’s Adventure (22 min)
Moomin goes on an adventure with Little My and Too-tick, who lives in the bath-house. He meets the invisible mice, who also stays there for winter, and he almost meets the Lady of the Cold, the most fearsome of all winter’s manifestations…

Episode 22: Visitors in Winter (22 min)
Moomin and Little My have finally settled into their wintry existence, living on Too-ticki’s fish soup and Moominmamma’s jam, of which there fortuantely is an awful lot. They meet the hearty Mr. Brisk who lives in an igloo and Sorry-oo, a timid dog who only dreams of running with the wolves that are nightly heard howling in Lonely Mountains.

Episode 36: Christmas is Coming (22 min)
Moominfamily has already started hibernating when they are woken up by a busy Hemulen who tells them they can’t possibly go on sleeping when Christmas is coming! The Moomins haven’t a clue what Christmas is (being clever enough to sleep Winter away), but everyone tells them of all the preparations one must make to meet Christmas. They do their best, and wait, and wait….

Episode 38: The Spell (22 min)
Spring has already come in Moominvalley and Snufkin is back from his journey, but Moominfamily sleeps on and apparently nothing can wake them up. The others decide this can be no natural sleep, and conclude that the witch must be responsible. She admits to having cast a spell, but is not very willing to lift it again.

Free admission with online pre-booking. Pre-book your seat HERE.
All-day screenings during museum opening hours.
All five episodes will be screened back-to-back in each session. The total duration of each session is 110 minutes.
