This November, ArtScience on Screen spotlights three artists – Ruth Asawa, Anna Campbell Bliss and Hilma af Klint – who defied categories of gender and genre in their artistic practice. Exploring the fields of art, science, mathematics and technology, these women continued to produce a prolific body of work in an industry dominated by the idea of a male “genius”.
Taking reference from John Berger’s seminal work Ways of Seeing, the artists featured in ArtScience on Screen: New Ways of Seeing encourage us to consider new perspectives in the creative possibilities across art and science, and reexamine an art-historical canon that often fails to articulate spaces for alternative voices.
Their stories serve as a reminder to the grit and indomitable creative spirit of the women whose influence have been erased, forgotten or gone unrecognized, demanding a rewrite of the histories we have come to know.
ArtScience on Screen: New Ways of Seeing is part of the Women of Art and Science season at ArtScience Museum.
