Humans are complex creatures shaped by layers that include ethnicity, culture, religion, language, gender, education, economic status amongst many others. These intersecting categories are not made equal. There is a power play within different relationships that forms in-group/out-group, majority/minority, dominance/subordinance, etc. This interaction of negotiations results in the formation of the third space, called hybridity. Asam di Gunung, Garam di Laut attempts to explore these daily tensions in the creation of a hybrid culture. What strategies do individuals use to find this third space, or the shared identity within all these value-clashes? Also, where else – art, language, or even in a seemingly mundane act such as getting dressed and choosing cutlery – do these confrontations occur so that life continues to function properly in our hybrid multi-cultural society?
