Cristene Chang Hoei 25 Hours series: The Violet Hour (2009), Oil-based mixed media, 56 x 76 cm
Chan Hampe Galleries presents a solo exhibition of veteran mixed-media artist and printmaker Cristene Chang Hoei (b.1942) whose art practice spans over 3 decades. This solo exhibition follows on the heels of Cristene’s receipt of the Bronze Award from the UOB Painting of the Year 2014 and the artist’s feature in the book Women Artists in Singapore (B.T Tan, National Heritage Board) and related exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum.
Cristene is one of the few artists in Singapore to own and manage her own studio press – a manual printmaking press she has affectionately nicknamed her “companion”. Her press has been exclusively adjusted and finely calibrated to handle her hand-made templates, matrix plates and odd-sized papers, producing her signature reticulate lines, rich textures and layering.
Against the grain of expectations for printmaking art works – Cristene’s oil-based works are unique one-off pieces, deliberately not produced in multiples or editions as is expected for prints but still deploying a medley of printmaking techniques and processes. Arduous to produce and often involving numerous ‘pulls’ through the press to create the dense and rich layering she is known for, her suite of works form some of the rarer representations of mixed media printmaking in the Asian region.
Born in 1942, this 72-year old veteran is a fine art graduate in printmaking from Middlesex University London, with a foundation at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Her unique mixed media works have secured her several commendations and awards.
