Awakening by Iskandar Jalil

Awakening is the latest exhibition of works by veteran Singaporean artist Dr Iskandar Jalil. Running from 25 December 2020 to 3 January 2021 at ION Art Gallery, Awakening is organised by Tembusu Art Gallery and curated by independent curator Syed Muhd Hafiz. The exhibition showcases more than 80 new works produced at Dr Iskandar’s studio, Temasek Potters.

A showcase of strength and the undying passion of one of Singapore’s most well-loved and respected potters, it was inspired by an epiphany Dr Iskandar had earlier in the year of the pandemic as he realised that “…his body could fail him anytime.” After the difficult Phase 1 of Singapore’s Circuit Breaker period, the disciplined artist returned to his studio during Phase 2 with a renewed vigour to produce this latest series of works.

Largely inspired by events from his life, the artworks are a collection of the familiar vessel forms, as well as never-seen-before dynamic sculptural pieces. Despite the limitations of his physical abilities at the age of 80, Dr Iskandar has also conceptualised and created significant sculptural works like Let the Sleeping Dogs Lie measuring in at 2.76m long and weight about 150 kg. The exhibition is a testament to his dedication to his craft and an encapsulation of his lifelong dialogue with clay.
