Psychotherapists and emerging artists Eugenia Gajardo and Mira Yoon present new Contemporary Abstract paintings that challenge viewers to ponder the role of art in life, and as an extension, the role that art-making plays in allowing us to externalise our inner selves, an important component in psychotherapy.
Yoon calls her process an “unconscious mathematics,” where each piece is an attempt to create a visually dynamic rendition of her inner state. By juxtaposing complementary colours to evoke a sense of space, depth and dynamism, while using her aesthetic sense to balance the elements in the composition, complex and psychological landscapes emerge. Yoon’s use of acrylic to produce the characteristic flat, smooth surfaces of her paintings produces optical depth within her compositions.
Gajardo continues in her ongoing existential efforts to become that which she is meant to be. A process she began exploring through painting from her first solo exhibition in October 2014, she views the nature of existence and life as meaningless, and instead searches for meaning principally through her art and psychotherapeutic work. Gajardo’s rich life experiences and talent for emotional intelligence unfold as compelling, textured compositions on canvas from which brilliant mindscapes emerge. Her paintings are evocative records of her experience with reaching into herself and expressing the depths within. Her use of mixed media composed of acrylic, ink, crushed crystal and sand creates rich textures and a semi-sculptural quality to the surface of her paintings. The medium and the effect it produces plays a fundamental role in how the viewer experiences and perceives the inner transparency within Gajardo’s compositions. Her paintings are accompanied by original poetry, written to express and reveal the depths both within herself and within her canvasses.
Both artist’s canvasses underline the essential quality of how art making reveals the inner depths of the creator. In the presence of these paintings, the viewer peers into a brave and vulnerable baring of the artist’s soul. Through Gajardo and Yoon’s canvasses, viewers are invited to examine their own essential selves through the visual exploration of colours, images and the dynamics of various art media.
