Opera Gallery Singapore presents ‘Brilliant Hues: The Power of Red and Gold,’ a curated selection of artworks featuring these two festive colours which represent prosperity, good fortune,
happiness, power and herald new beginnings.
The application of gold colour in art has existed since ancient times. Associated with wealth and prosperity, gold was prominently used in the art and architecture of Egypt, Aztecs, Mayas, Incas, and during the Renaissance in Europe in Christian art. At the same time, gold was being used in the Far East in Japan, China, Indonesia and Thailand to symbolise power and the divine. The colour gold communicates theological truth, divine light and spiritual illumination across cultures.
The colour red that is used in art today dates back to the red ochre that was used in prehistoric cave paintings. Red is an emotionally intense colour and symbolises love, passion, energy and intensity. In the Chinese culture, it is a sign of vitality, celebration, joy, fortune and good luck. It is a colour of celebration and when used along with gold, forms a duality that is powerful and prosperous in its essence.
Opera Gallery is proud to present more than twenty artists in this exhibition.
