Buangkok Mall Life Club is an art space considering the potential of intimacy, connection and alternative economy in a Singaporean mall. It featured various components: Buangkok Exchange Department considered human-object relationships as well as how value is ascribed, eventually transforming to a free store where customers could use object residues to make sculptures; Heartbreak Altar invited people to let go of objects from past relationships; interviews with mall workers as a way to make visible their labour and narratives; collaborative text-based paintings about recent happenings in people’s lives, as a way to soften the alienation non-art-goers might feel in gallery spaces. Visitors could spend time in a cosy community space that functioned as an antithesis to consumerism. The exhibition documents the project while featuring new and transformed elements.
