Comprising suspended popsicle-coloured ceramics, Ahmad Abu Bakar’s Candy Garden offers an escape into a playful and surreal dreamland. Each ceramic piece was thrown individually into various sizes and forms, decorated with coloured horizontal lines based on floral motifs and geometric designs. Modelled after structures and patterns found in everyday life, these pieces are symbolic forms that allude to the ways our natural and built environments coalesce to construct ideal conditions of living. By lining the Esplanade Concourse steps with mirrored surfaces, Ahmad augments and alters the sightlines and perspectives in the viewing of the installation. Candy Garden thus invites deeper contemplations into such notions of perfection, especially as the relationships between our natural, urban and imagined environments become increasingly complex.
