Cuturi Gallery is proud to present a debut solo exhibition, Hard To Say Goodbye, by local artist Casey Tan (b. 1994, Singapore). In Tan’s new series of works, human presence populates his paintings as he uses the medium of acrylic to capture scenes of the quiet, intimate, and gleeful moments of life around him.
Primarily inspired by people, Tan projects the fleetingness of memory and suspends his characters in time against local backdrops. Through paintings that chronicle between day and night time, at the heart of Tan’s works is the notion of lived experiences that turn into valuable memories which we try to hold on to. The artist captures this through both vibrant pulsing movements and the stillness of individuals portrayed in his paintings.
Casey Tan is a Singaporean painter whose works focus on visual metaphor and narrative. Drawing inspiration from everyday life, Casey reinterprets these experiences while stillkeeping in check with reality. Sometimes bringing drama and fantasy to the ordinary. Casey graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts in 2016, NAFA, where he was also a Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship recipient. Prior to NAFA, Casey studied Digital Animations at the Institute of Technical Education (2011-2012). In his recent practice, he tries to avoid operating by intuition, instead, he takes time to understand and explore different ways of interpreting a particular scenario. He strives to create works that hold narrative and experiments in different ways of using acrylic as a medium.
