Growing up in Ubud, Bali meant that Dana S. was surrounded by expansive landscapes and rice fields set against terraced hill-slopes. As nature was Dana’s first playground: the annual cycle of sowing, harvest and rites of celebration are themes central to his work. These subjects have stayed with Dana, throughout his artistic career, though his art has evolved and taken on an abstracted form.
Dana spent 4 years at the fine arts college in Denpasar. He also travelled through Italy and Switzerland where he studied the techniques of painting. Dana rarely uses a paint brush. Instead he applies colour with small incisive strokes to his canvas using a stick, palette knife or his fingers. Balinese landscapes, beaches, harvest celebrations and lotuses are amongst his favourite themes.
