Chok Yue Zan, We Used To Be Together, Strong Like Stones
Chok Yue Zan’s solo exhibition, titled Retrospect of Paradiso, is an exhibition that evocatively tells the story of a lost paradise, and emphasises the importance of familial ties through 13 mixed media paintings that are grouped into four series.
In this exhibition, the artist pays homage to memories of his family ties and grandparents’ place in Sabah, which he considers his paradise. Following his grandparents’ passing in 2003, his family was broken and the paradise slowly began to disappear as urbanisation projects took over.
Showcasing his unique mixed media approach of creatively utilising woodcutting techniques in his paintings to illustrate the disappearance of paradise, the artist forms his own distinctive visual language to express with precision deep personal emotions that invite the viewers to partake in his joyful nostalgia.
