Did you know that more than 300 million photos are uploaded per day on Facebook, with another 100 million on Instagram?
Against the backdrop of today’s image-propelled social media culture, National Gallery Singapore spotlights its photography collection with its first retrospective of a local photographer in the exhibition Chua Soo Bin: Truths & Legends.
A remarkable photographer and a Cultural Medallion award recipient, Chua Soo Bin is known for his ability to capture definitive portraits and sensitive images, built on his mastery of the craft and understanding of his subjects.
The exhibition is anchored by Chua’s Legends series, which comprises iconic portraits of 14 established Chinese ink masters, offering a rare insight into the nuances of their daily lives. It also includes his earlier pictorial and commercial photographs to trace the development of his artistic practice. To add a new dimension to the stories revealed in the portraits and deepen visitors’ appreciation of the artists, a selection of ink paintings by these masters will be exhibited too.
Featuring close to 100 photographic works alongside archival materials, Chua Soo Bin: Truths & Legends will give prominence to pivotal works in the development of photography in Singapore, a history which is traditionally overlooked.
