In a year filled with commemorative events for the Bicentennial, The Necessary Stage (TNS) responds with a remarkably audacious play entitled Civilised, which examines the complexities of colonisation and colonialism past, present and future.
Written by TNS’ Resident Playwright Haresh Sharma and directed by Artistic Director Alvin Tan, Civilised questions how decolonisation can happen in a world that continues to thrive on colonialism and colonial hang-ups.
How is colonisation’s history written, and who holds the right to define its narratives? How does a nation or society recover from the tragedies and disempowerment that colonisation inflicts?
Civilised features a star-studded cast comprising Edith Podesta, Ghafir Akbar, Koh Wan Ching, Lian Sutton and Siti Khalijah Zainal. The production will also see an exciting collaborative design team with He Shuming (multimedia), Adrian Tan (lighting), Vincent Lim (set) and Max Tan and Yuan Zhiying of MAX.TAN (costumes).
