Coucou Bazar presents the experimental outcomes of creative professionals Nadine Ouellet, Joanne Pang, Vicente Delgado, Corneliu Dinu Tudor Bodiciu and Ginette Chittick from the Faculty of Design, LASALLE College of the Arts, who completed a design-led residency programme for two weeks at the former atelier of the French artist Jean Dubuffet in Vence (France) in June 2019. Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985) was a multifaceted artist, whose practice often challenged the boundaries of art. He wrote poetry and theoretical texts, played jazz, experimented widely with diverse range of media, including what he called ‘animated painting’.
The aim of the design-led residency was to generate a plethora of creative investigations outside their usual areas of knowledge by breaking the confines of specialisms and interdisciplinary practices. Drawing from Dubuffet’s rudimentary mark-making that broke away from traditions, they immersed themselves in what was once Dubuffet’s creative environment and delved into unfamiliar territories of investigation. By intertwining disciplines through a brut and naive process, they created new bodies of creative works that are presented in this exhibition.
