Here’s your chance to get a first-hand experience of The Necessary Stage’s (TNS)
unique devising methodology jointly developed by Cultural Medallion recipients Alvin Tan (2014) and Haresh Sharma (2015) in a supportive and professional environment!
Characters and relationships are key to TNS’ signature works – indigenous, intercultural, character-driven and issue-based. founder and Artistic Director Alvin Tan and Resident Playwright Haresh Sharma will personally conduct this two-day Devising Masterclass, where they will share their distinctive creative process, honed over 29 years, through the creation of numerous important works such as Off Centre, Fundamentally Happy and Gemuk Girls.
Participants will create characters via a series of individual and group improvisational exercises. They will also collaboratively come up with scenarios, use tableaux and create scenes based on their improvised characters and side coaching.
Excerpts from the critically-acclaimed plays Model Citizens and Gemuk Girls will be screened, followed by a discussion with experienced devising collaborators and award-winning actors Karen Tan and Siti Khalijah Zainal about building their respective characters from the plays.
Participants will be selected via online registration. The class size will be capped at 18 pax.
Fee: $120 (Participation in both sessions is required)
