Talk by Young Curators Programme participant Wong Binghao
Don’t Be Rude is an admonishment often used by parents to teach their children restraint and civic obedience. This simple yet infantilizing warning serves as the departure point for this research project. Through theoretical research and an investigation of artistic and everyday practices, this project questions what constitutes ‘proper’ subjectivity. More importantly, it focuses on those who do not appear to achieve or perform ‘proper’ dispositions, and the reasons and consequences for not doing so. This research project explores the extents to which we are expected to demonstrate knowledge, relevance, and political correctness in order to be considered modern, global subjects.
