Terence Teo, Whispering Brooke, Ink on rice paper, 101 x 105 cm
Expressionistic Symphony is an exhibition by Singaporean artist Terence Teo. It is a showcase of the latest exploration by the artist of the rainforest with his unique artistic process of layering Chinese Ink.
Teo has gone through the rigorous trainings required to master Chinese Ink, however, his paintings are not contained by the chains of tradition. Having spent years immersing himself within nature, his primary muse, his raw responses directly translated onto rice paper has resulted in dynamically expressive paintings with a modern aesthetic. His painting process is an unmediated one, where his emotions flows directly through his brush and onto rice paper. This creates paintings that that bear strong lines and surprising hues that merge together and syntheses the spectrum of colours and sounds found in nature.
This collection of paintings represents the diverse strata of the rainforest. From windswept mountainscapes and waving trees to tumbling waterfalls at the heart of the rainforest. Each scene is rendered in Teo’s signature expressionistic style lines and colours. Yet what sets these collection apart from his previous works are the vivid presence of an elusive emotion that whispers a tune in your ear. Expressionistic Symphony exhibits paintings that are tied to stylistic movements of a symphony – Adagio, Allegro, Minuet and Sonata. From the quivering quiet of expansive landscapes to pulsing rhythms of a bubbling brook, each emotive tune that springs from Teo’s paintings were felt by the artist. View together they harmonises into a grand arrangement befitting that of a grand symphony. Expressionistic Symphony is an splendid experience of the rich visual, audio and emotions of the rainforest.
