FADE is the first visual arts exhibition that unearths and captures memories of the Bras Basah Complex. Bras Basah Complex was chosen as a place of study for this exhibition because of its rich history as a landmark for many of Singapore’s treasured memories. It was a popular venue for the launch of new songs by many Xinyao groups, and is fondly called the “City of Books” even till today. With Bras Basah Complex in such close proximity to SMU, and amidst rapid urban changes and the fast demise of most bookshops, this exhibition is both timely and relevant.
The title FADE plays on the word “fad” and “fade”. It aims to bring light and understanding, and uncover Bras Basah Complex as a multifaceted, constantly evolving and adapting place in today’s society. Comprising three components—shelves, “white books”, and a video montage—FADE documents trades found at the Complex and features the shop owners and their stories in video, photography, drawings, paintings and texts. There are 39 white books specially made by the club members to mark 39 years of Bras Basah Complex.
