NIE Art Gallery will open an exhibition Field Trip Project Asia on August 25, 2015, featuring forty-one works by Singaporean and international artists. All works are unique yet wearable because they are originally Japanese elementary school backpacks donated as relief materials for the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. These backpacks were surplus among others sent from all over the globe, however, they were never used as intended and were saved and reused in a slightly greater context. This is a brand new art initiative responding to social issues related but not limited to environmental and natural disasters taking place in recent years in Asia. As a leading nation of cultural diversity of the region, this exhibit will represent Singapore’s broad-minded capacity commemorating its fiftieth anniversary. The exhibition will also include projects produced by students from Yishun Town Secondary School, led by Candy Tong.
