PANAS is a debut solo exhibition by Malaysian contemporary artist Haafiz Shahimi. Following his successful solo exhibition, AWAS, at Core Design Gallery earlier this year, PANAS continues to highlight this artist-pyrographer’s speciality—creating art with fire.
Harnessing flames to burn imprints onto canvas, PANAS, which means ‘hot’ in Malay, explores the techniques of pyrography printing and direct fire burning in Haafiz’s art practice. The exhibition also highlights his response to Asian philosophies, local cultural histories and contemporary social issues. Making extensive use of Malaysian elements, Haafiz’s art has always grasped a sense of locality that transcends time and space. His artworks, Daun Berangan and Intensity of Heaven and Earth, synthesise Malay and Southeast Asian cultural elements to encourage East-West dialogue.
Graduated with a BA Fine Arts from MARA University of Technology (UiTM), Haafiz Shahimi is recognised for invigorating local craft and printmaking disciplines using unorthodox techniques. Awarded the Young Guns Art Award Malaysia in 2017, his works are collected by private and corporate collectors internationally.
