Han Sai Por remembers aspects of her childhood fondly; in particular, her memories of being surrounded by trees in her village located at Changi, or spending time by the beach observing the wildlife all around. This habit of exploring nature carried well forward into her adulthood, where Han would often go on walks in the forest and observe the flourishing ecosystem.
The exhibited works in The Forest and Its Soul thus draw from the artist’s own experiences of walking through dense forests, which Han has described as being an emotional landscape. Ultimately, the artist hopes for visitors to reacquaint themselves with the full breadth of nature, and to encourage care and reverence for the living world all around us through her multi-layered and textural works.
