Hello Joo Chiat – Invading The Onion Man

A symmetrical Joo Chiat by Andre Wee

OH! Open House initiates Hello – a debut fringe programme to its popular ticketed walkabout – that aims to introduce the colourful myriad of Joo Chiat residents to the public. Happening on the last two weekends of March, Hello features craft demonstrations by a Peranakan Kebaya maker and a Peranakan florist, and talks by an art collector, a fashion creative director, and even a Hokkien Mee uncle, who invite the public into their private spaces for an intimate sharing. Headlining the programme will be a back-alley collaborative performance – Invading the Onion Man – conceptualised by actress Tan Kheng Hua.

21, 22, 28, 29 March 2015
Back alley behind Koon Seng Road, opposite JK Center
7.30PM, 20 minutes | Free Admission
A girl passes from picture-perfect Koon Seng Road into the arteries of where Joo Chiat really comes alive. The back alleys are always furtive, gritty. But in the cool hues of dusk shaded by tungsten, it just seems a little more romantic. She is just another young girl, pacing these in-be- tween spaces. And bit-by-bit, she isn’t any more. It’s a performance. Back alley. An elegy to the Onion Man peeling his ten bags of onions — this was his corner, work, and life. He hasn’t been seen since the police took him away for questioning.

Dancer Chloe Chua collaborates with Leslie Tan on cello, Lim Yu-Beng on lights, Samantha Rui and Band on vocals and sound, and Tan Kheng Hua for ideas and company.
