Hikayat sang kancil (1983) was the first short animation film made in Malaysia. The film follows a sang kancil (mouse deer), which is often used in Malay stories to represent shrewd characters. This exhibition by lecturers from Visual Studies explores representations and contemporary equivalents of sang kancil. Extending the lecturers’ research on animals used in modern fables and moral narratives, it presents their interpretations and responses to sang kancil, and the relationship of these to art education and institutions.
