2019 marks 20 years of Nathan Yong’s foray into the furniture design scene, a trajectory that has also included numerous collaborations with world-renowned brands that have propelled him onto international stage.
The retrospective show aims to chronicle the award-winning designer’s journey as visitors get in touch with the thought process and ideas behind each design, which can be viewed up close and intimately in a gallery-like display. New works, which are on-going collaborations with manufacturers, will also provide an insight into the design process, and will be complemented by sharing sessions with collaborators on their materials, technology and the experience of working with a designer. The aim is to push for greater collaboration between local industries and local designers, with the National Design Centre as the platform to present these dialogues.
Presented in a pavilion setting with white canvas cascading from a hidden frame, a stark backdrop is created to pronounce each work on display, like paintings coming to life, prompting visitors to immerse themselves in the line-up of designs, to discover a continuous pattern or a new find at every turn.
