IRAMA (Rhythm) by Mulyana

Indonesian artist Mulyana puts a spin on the Hermès 2019 theme, In Pursuit of Dreams, with his latest hand-crocheted installation, Irama (Rhythm).

Known for his immersive installations, Mulyana’s works stem from a personal dream of putting together a beautiful underwater home for the Mogus – an alter-ego that he has created as a way to express himself. Laboriously hand-crocheted, Mulyana presents each installation as a prayer andmeditation.

In conceiving Irama (Rhythm), Mulyana dreams of himself as a musician, using each stitch as musical notes to compose a rhythm concurrent to the assembly of this spectacular coral dreamscape. Hermès objects find home within the coral clusters like treasures waiting to be discovered at the bottomof the sea.

Irama (Rhythm), as with Mulyana’s other works, began as small organisms that bloom with quiet contemplation into vividly-coloured clusters. As the form of these clusters gradually develop with crocheting, the rhythm in accompaniment modulates.

Dreams, according to Mulyana, are a built-up desire that requires momentum to bring into reality. With that, he offers Irama – a rhythm that he has composed to help make dreams come true.
