Prolific sculptor Lim Leong Seng will be holding his ninth solo exhibition, Journey from the Wilderness: Lim Leong Seng, at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Singapore, from 13 – 24 March 2024. The veteran artist tackles climate, conflict, and the human condition in new exhibition. This exhibition is a metaphorical sojourn spanning over five decades of artmaking that delves into a world grappling with climate crisis, conflict and adversity with desire for social change. As an artist, Lim approaches artmaking both materially and conceptually, confronting dilemmas of our age through a series of sculptural installations, silkscreen paintings and sketches.
Lim’s artistic journey, spanning over five decades, demonstrates a consistent engagement with social issues. From his early exposure to the experimental art movement in the 1970s to his present-day works, Lim has used his art as a platform to confront the challenges of our times. A well-known artist with over 40 iconic public sculpture and heritage commissions gracing Singapore’s landscape; Lim graduated from the Baharuddin Vocational Institute in 1970 majoring in fabric, design and printing. At the institute, he met artist-educators like Iskandar Jalil and Jaafar Latiff who shaped his early artistic vision. Immersed in the experimental spirit of the conceptual art movement in the 1970s, Lim saw new materials and methods as tools for conveying ideas and engaging with social issues. He continues to ponder the complexities of the world, using his practice to question our place and the challenges we face.
