In Joy, watercolourist Aaron Gan takes on a much beloved genre of Chinese literati, the bird-and-flowers painting (花鳥畫). It is easy to interprete this as a migration of Aaron’s watercolour practice from West to the East: from an early facility with the British watercolour style in his first two solo exhibitions, to the stark monochromaticism and oriental aesthetic of his third solo show last year. A fusion of East and West with a cheerful and whimsical theme, the exhibition contains 19 watercolour paintings featuring birds, plants and fruits, symbolising the joy that the artist has experienced in his journey as a full-time artist.
