One of Singapore’s most well-regarded street photographers, Aik Beng Chia, also known as ABC, is famous for his snapshots of daily life shared on Instagram. In this exhibition, he presents his portrait of Singapore — or Singkarpor. The exhibition’s very title reflects the essence of Aik Beng’s photos which are taken in public spaces and on the streets of Singapore. They convey a sense of intimacy, documenting the average man and his everyday life in the raw.
“Usually, only the pretty side of Singapore is presented to the world. My quest is to photograph the mundane side, the real side, and make people take a second look at the day-to-day things they walk past and take for granted.”
His vivid and gritty images have earned him a strong following on Instagram numbering over 20,000 and have also caught the attention of UK newspaper, The Guardian, which let him take over the Guardian Travel Instagram account for a three-day special feature on Singapore as seen through his eyes. Aik Beng has also been invited to be a contributor to Everyday Asia on Instagram, and his works have been exhibited and published internationally.
A carefully curated collection will be shown at K+ Singkarpor, which includes a special feature on the passing of Lee Kuan Yew, an event which saw an unprecedented outpouring of emotion from normally reserved Singaporeans.
