The arts is a reflection of our times and gives us insight to a community’s cultural practices and beliefs. In celebration of the Deepavali season, Esplanade’s annual Kalaa Utsavam – Indian Festival of Arts will take place from 15 – 24 Nov 2019. In its 18th edition, the festival reminds us how tradition can keep us rooted and enrich us as we navigate this contemporary age.
Bangalore-based carnatic rockers Agam return, this time featuring an exclusive segment with celebrated Hindustani vocalist Kaushiki Chakraborty. Also returning is dance maverick Aditi Mangaldas with her signature blend of kathak with contemporary dance and theatre elements. Bollywood lovers will be thrilled as composer, singer and lyricist Amit Trivedi makes his Singapore debut at this year’s festival.
Kalaa Utsavam continues to be a platform for artistic firsts by Singapore artists. With Bhaskar’s Arts Academy, we co-produce Marabu – The First Ripple, the group’s first venture into dance-theatre. Swarhythm Ensemble, founded and led by accomplished tabla artist Nawaz Mirajkar, will launch their first album, and homegrown Hindi band The Band Walle presents their first ticketed concert.
