Find out more about the various communities who have lived, worked and played in Kampong Gelam from 1965 to the present day with the Malay Heritage Centre’s special exhibition Kampong Gelam: Beyond the Port Town. The exhibition looks at how cross-cultural interactions have engaged and defined the lives of those within the Kampong Gelam precinct. Centring around the theme of bangsa (Nation), the exhibition explores the diverse racial and religious roots of the inhabitants, tradesmen and institutions in Kampong Gelam over the course of five decades, and how these define the concept of a unified community and nation. Through the interrelations between cultural artefacts and contemporary works in the exhibition, visitors will be able to understand how Kampong Gelam has changed over the years.
