AC43 Gallery is pleased to support this new exhibition jointly organised by local artists April Ng Kiow Ngor and Alvin Tan Yuan Kiat, which focuses on ceramic art. April Ng’s work draws on forms inspired by the organic life of nature, reveling in the mysteries revealed though the most minute and tranquil of essence present in the world of nature. With bold, sensual contours, her ceramic pieces echo the beauty and tenacity of rocks that are unfazed and self-sufficient in an environment exposed to constant flux and destruction. The exhibition marks April’s first foray into ceramics, accompanied by some of her prints bearing similar thematic threads.
On the other hand, Alvin Tan’s new series of ceramic work, titled ‘Clay-vid’, is a playful juxtaposition to April Ng’s organic expression of the unyielding strength of nature. Taking cues from new cultural phenomena that arose from the pandemic, Alvin Tan explores how concepts of the ‘new normal’ have shaped or divided societies and our responses in these brittle times. His Clay-vid series, which began during the pandemic lockdown in 2020, took the artist about two years to complete. Socio-scenarios such as contamination, transmission and vaccination have been judiciously woven into his ceramic forms, from the playful characterisation of SARS-CoV-2 as a dazzling “star of the moment” to the wry sculptural expressions with hands, feet and shoulders to capture our responses and behaviours during trying moments.
