The exhibition ruminates on the solitary figure of the monkey in China’s cultural memory and the artist’s own memories of his childhood, drawing from imagery of the Monkey King from the famous Journey to the West and the monkeys in the wild and in captivity in his hometown Guilin. In this body of new paintings, Li develops his exploration of human themes of loneliness and solitude through the figure of the monkey.
