Liu Kuo-sung. Moon Walk. 1969. Ink and acrylic with collage on paper. 59 × 85 cm. Private Collection
Liu Kuo-sung: Experimentation as Method is the largest exhibition by a Singapore public museum dedicated to Chinese ink master, Liu Kuo-sung. Visitors will see Chinese ink paintings in a different light through this retrospective show of over 60 works, as the exhibition journeys through his art in different time periods over seven decades.
From “space paintings” inspired by the 1968 moon landing by the US Apollo 8 space craft, to innovative texture-based techniques such as “paper-tearing”, “water rubbing” and “steeped ink”, Liu Kuo-sung continuously reconstructs tradition with the modern, enabling the creation of a new approach to the time-honoured tradition of Chinese ink painting.
The show highlights Liu’s significant innovations and contributions to the development of modern Chinese ink painting, as his experiments in art goes beyond the brush by exploring different materials, textures and even inventing “Liu Kuo-sung paper”.
