Heinz Mack, Ohne Titel, 2013, Chromatische Konstellation (Chromatic Constellation), ccrylic on canvas, 130 × 160 cm
Considered as one of the most significant figures in German art, Heinz Mack is a founding member of the iconic ZERO group. The central theme of Heinz Mack’s art is light. His exceptionally diverse oeuvre includes sculptures made from an array of materials (light-stelae, light-rotors, light-reliefs and light-cubes) to paintings, drawings, pastels, graphics and photography. Over the years, Mack has also expanded his practice to include the design of public spaces, church interiors, stage settings and mosaics.
“Mack: Review and Outlook | A Special Selection – Homage to his 85th birthday” at ARNDT Singapore represents a significant cross-section from the artist’s oeuvre. Within this exhibition a curated selection of artworks in a variety of media span the period from the late fifties to the present. The grouped assemblage of pieces trace the trajectory of Mack’s enduring practice that, to this day, embodies the ZERO group’s tremendous innovation; an unique, expressive product of German post-war art. Within these works defined composition is prized and elements of bold colour and striking form championed.
Devoid of literal representation, instead the artist’s output favours a focus on the optical and kinetic, engaging in a sense of rhythmic movement, illusory dimension, and dynamism. Within this landmark exhibition Mack’s signature visual language enlivens a dialogue between his paintings, works on paper, collages and reliefs on display, provoking spatial perception with historic resonance.
