Masterpiece Auction House will hold its auction Southeast Asian, Chinese, Modern & Contemporary Art evening sale, presenting 175 masterpieces from various artists across South East Asia. The auction will be held at Sheraton Towers Singapore.
Highlight of the sale will be two rare artworks by Basoeki Abdullah and Widayat. All artworks will be available for public preview at Global Auction Pte. Ltd, 1 Kaki Bukit Road 1, #02-16 Enterprise One, from 31 October till 7 November 2019, from 11am to 5pm.
An additional preview will be held before the main event starts on 9 November 2019 from 10am to 4pm, while the auction starts at 6.30pm at Sheraton Tower, 39 Scotts Road, Ballroom #2, Singapore.
Basoeki Abdullah, Sang Pemenang (The Victor), 200 x 300 cm
Basoeki Abdullah, born in 1915, is the second son of Abdullah Soerjosoebroto, a prominent landscape painter. His passion and dedication, combined with his father’s guidance, allow him to become a prominent realist painter in the 21st century. From beautiful landscapes to sensuous beauty, Basoeki adds romantic elements to his paintings, which become his characteristic style. The particular painting title “Sang Pemenang” or “The Victor” is one of Basoeki’s masterpieces. Depicting a man with hero-like quality (tall, muscular, handsome, and wearing a cape), riding a mythical bird “Garuda” (eagle-like bird with 5 times the size of an eagle) which, in the legend, only appears to turn the tide of the battle. With lightning and sunlight that seems to be bursting, the hero’s victory is unquestionable. Moreover, the size of the painting, 200 cm by 300 cm, further signifies the importance of this artwork.
Widayat, Monkey Forest
Widayat was born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, in 1919. After some military training (in the colonial era) he studied at the Indonesia Art Academy Yogyakarta, where he learned from renowned artists such as Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, Trubus, Kusnadi, and most notably Kartono Yudhokusumo, who influenced Widayat’s decorative style. Widayat’s style is well known as “decora-magic”. In the artwork “Monkey Forest” the immense detail allows to create an illusion of thick forest with breathtaking scenery. Although no monkey is shown, we know that they are looming in the forest, or at least we believe so!
