Recently crowned Dance Singapore Dance winner and National Arts Council’s SPROUTS All Star 2012 Most Promising Choreographer, Shahrin Johry, announces the creation of his brand new, full-length production, KA, to be performed at the Drama Centre Black Box from 15-16 January 2016.
In KA, Shahrin pays homage to the quest of seeking knowledge; and the transition of passing knowledge from one generation to another and a presentation dedicated to his teachers and
mentor, Kavitha Krishnan whom he has been working under her guidance for the past 10 years. Shahrin sees KA as a beautiful gift of receiving and and passing on of knowledge. A street dancer in his youth, Shahrin thirst for knowledge initiated him on a journey to learn different dance forms and genres, leading him to learn Bharathanatyam dance vocabulary for creation of works inspired from Asian aesthetics and dynamism and eventually enrolling in Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore to further hone his artistry.
To achieve his dream of presenting KA, Shahrin decided to work with several collaborators and embarked on his artistic journey. First to join onboard was contemporary dance company, Maya Dance Theatre with dancers Bernice Lee and Eva Tey, followed by music composer and National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award recipient (2013), Bani Hykal and music director Kailin Yong. Bani and Kailin will work in collaboration for this project with Shahrin. KA also features an eminent array of dance artists, Susan Yeung, Guo Xiaoxing (Star) and his teacher and mentor, Kavitha Krishnan herself who will be performing for KA along side Shahrin Johry.
Renowned Photographer, Tan Ngiap Heng, will document the process creation of KA with research process documentation by Dr. Caren Carino, Head of Deaprtment Dance, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Neo Kim Seng will provide dramaturgy.
