Miau Wong Solo Exhibition – Wandering Inspirations features renowned Malaysian painter Miau Wong and his extensive collection of semi-abstract art from past works – the Cosmic series and the Xinjiang series – as well as, new additions from his new collection Wandering Inspirations.
After graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1972, Miau embarked on an ambitious three-month tour around Europe to study the original paintings by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso and William Turner. He also visited world-class museums such as the Musée d’Orsay in Paris; Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum in Holland, and the National Gallery in London.
As the 1990s came around, this proved to be a turning point for Miau with the debut of his Cosmic series exhibition and the reinvention of his distinct artistic style, fully cementing his status in the art community. For the first time, his Cosmic series dealt with pushing of one’s perceptions of reality and imagination through fantasy and cosmic phenomenon, such as outer space, the Sun, the Moon and elements of nature such as wind and rain. Similarly, Wong experimented further with themes of nature in his Xinjiang series and in paintings such as Autumn, Mysterious Light and The Gate, which captured the enthralling and seamless transition between different hues of blue visible in an autumn sky.
For his new exhibition Wandering Inspirations, Wong was inspired by the works of great French artist Henri Matiss to experiment with the arrangement and composition of varying colours, representing spontaneity, creativity and emotions.
