Sotheby’s will hold its first auction of Modern & Contemporary Art in Singapore, with 50 Modern and Contemporary art offerings by Asian masters, including Georgette Chen, Zao Wou-Ki, Chu The-Chun, Yayoi Kusama and Le Pho, together with works by both established and emerging international artists, such as Georges Mathieu, Javier Calleja and MR. The auction will be livestreamed to the world via sothebys.com on August 28, following a preview exhibition at the Regent Singapore from August 25-27.
The sale will be led by Singaporean Modern Art pioneer Georgette Chen’s Boats and Shophouses, depicting a tranquil boat quay in Singapore during the 1960s, and internationally renowned Abstract artist Zao Wou-Ki’s Sans Titre, Entre Août Et Décembre 1958, an exquisite and rare example from the artist’s celebrated ‘Oracle Bone’ series, which marked his transition to abstract art. Works by Vietnamese and Indonesian artists are also peppered throughout, such as Le Pho and Mai Trung Thu’s signature floral paintings and portraits, as well as rare pieces by Walter Spies, Willem Gerard Hofker and Hendra Gunawan. Responding to the great demand from collectors both in Asia and globally, the auction will also feature works by those artists making waves across the art world today, including Michel Majerus and Rafa Macarrón.
