In celebration of the nation’s 54th birthday, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore showcases a collection of watercolour artworks by local artist, Mr. Tay Zhiyong. Moments of Singapore is a display of everyday scenes around Singapore as seen from the eyes from the artist.
The compilation of 19 scenes is part of Zhiyong’s visual diary and varies from fleeting moments that sparked joy in the heart of the artist, to scenes that caught his curiosity in his daily moments around his homeland. They include casual scenes along Amoy Street in the morning to an evening at Robinson Road, or depictions of commercial and sailboats around Singapore’s iconic waterfront areas.
A self-professed “average Singaporean who happens to paint”, Zhiyong is an art teacher by day and watercolourist at leisure. He was an apprentice of second generation Singapore artist, Mr. Leo Hee Tong and graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Masters in Architecture. Upon graduation, Zhiyong joined an architectural firm for 1.5 years before switching to teaching art at secondary school. As an educator of the arts, Zhiyong believes in leading students by example in creating a portfolio of watercolour works during his free time.
His work was featured in an exhibition of artworks by the Ministry of Education (MOE) art teachers in 2016 as well as the Urban Sketchers Singapore’s publication, I Love Geylang Serai. Zhiyong was admitted into the Singapore Watercolour Society and participated at the 47th Singapore Watercolour Society Annual Exhibition 2016. Recently, Zhiyong was selected as one of the finalists for the Angelico Art Award 2018.
