“Motion and Moment: Rhythms of Strength” iby Anna Shatilova s a curated collection of portraits of modern women in Asia, exploring the dual narrative of vulnerability and transformation, whilst capturing the journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
The exhibition is a collection of portraits that delve into the essence of women’s personal expression, juxtaposed with society’s expectations of beauty. The photographs taken at different times emphasize the profound strength inherent in vulnerability. A celebration of the courage it takes to be authentic, to let down one’s guard and embrace the true self, flaws and all.
The portraits were taken over two years, the first, a series focusing on the interplay between movement and stillness in an exploration of how motion encapsulates the essence of diverse womanhood. Anna’s signature natural light portraits capture the fluidity of life’s transitions, showcasing the strength and grace in movement.
Whilst studio portraits, in collaboration with Lilac Summers, a Singapore-based florist, capture women inspired by mythical creatures represented by floral artistry. The portraits are a study on the real and fantasy identities of women, capturing their strength, grace and profound serenity. Sitters are known to the artist and where chosen based on their diverse stories and distinct life-stage.
A series of recent portraits were shot in 2024 at the elderly center GoodLife by Montfort Care. Portraits of the center’s visitors celebrate the intrinsic qualities of womanhood which remain constant regardless of age. The playful portraits demonstrate that women want to be seen and celebrated whatever their age.
Anna sees beauty in all women and uses her art to capture the depth, resilience, and grace of each subject, her practice promotes the message that the essence of being a woman is eternal, across different life stages and should be celebrated.
