In collaboration with Siong Leng Musical Association (SLMA), Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) is proud to present 南音 Nanyin and Music Composition on 18 Feb 2021 (Thurs), 7.30pm to 8.30pm, at the Lee Foundation Theatre. This presentation showcase marks the completion of seven weeks of Nanyin (南音) and Music Composition workshop and sectional practice sessions, borne from an academic collaboration between NAFA’s Institute of Southeast Asian Arts (ISEAA) and School of Music (SOM), with SLMA . A total of 37 student performers and 4 SLMA musicians will showcase three pieces, Qi Shou Ban (起手板), Pears in the Wind (风打梨) and Into the Garden (直入花园), to illustrate a traditional Nanyin repertory of zhi (指), pu (谱) and qu (曲). The performers will also present a Nanyin-inspired student composition crafted during the workshops sessions.
Highlighting the creative synergies of NAFA and SLMA, this collaboration sees 35 Chinese Instrumental majors and 12 Composition majors from SOM, work alongside five principal musicians from SLMA for the first time. Their programme consists of weekly workshop sessions and sectional practice on Nanyin, which is integrated with NAFA course modules ‘Music in Context’ and ‘Professional Studies (Ensemble)’. Selected sessions will be featured in a short video documentary that will be aired as part of the presentation.
