“New Narrative” is a solo exhibition of 15 ink paintings by Cultural Medallion recipient, Mr. Ang Ah Tee. For this series of works, Ang, a second-generation Singaporean artist known for his lyrical depictions of landscapes in acrylic, shifted to the language of Chinese ink to tell the stories of early Singapore.
The artist’s collection of old black and white photographs of Singapore in the 1960s and 1970s sparked the creation of this series of ink works. The scenes that have made their way into these 15 paintings in New Narrative are all vastly different in the present day, with the old Hock Lam Street (see Hock Lam Street, lower left) replaced by the Funan, a modern retail mall. Back in the day, boats on the Singapore river were aplenty (see Clarke Quay, lower right), hawkers and their customers lined the streets, and stalls selling daily necessities filled our shophouses. Ang’s ink paintings are his way of reminiscing those days of yore.
