Odori is an exuberant form of traditional dance that began as public street performance in 17th-century, Edo-period Japan. Closely related to kabuki, which only has male performers, Odori is performed by men, women, and children. The Nishikawa company has been involved in Odori for over 160 years. Since 1945 they have organized the Nagoya Odori festival, infusing their Odori performances with elements of Noh and kabuki drama, as well as modern choreography. This spectacular evening of dance, drama, film, and sake is not to be missed.
