Noriyuki Misawa, a shoemaker who has a record of producing shoes for honorable names such as Hollywood film director, Spike Lee, and the Imperial Household Agency in Japan, will be holding his first solo exhibition in Singapore in March 2023.
After holding several exhibitions across the globe at places like New York, London, and Sapporo’s Moerenuma Park designed by artist, Isamu Noguchi, Misawa’s works are finally making its way to Southeast Asia. Yearning to share the craft of shoemaking to the world, Misawa has been teaching not only in Tokyo, but also short courses in Singapore where the art of shoes is not yet in bloom. He looks to create a stage for shoes in the world of art by infusing the intricate technical skills of shoemaking to ideas that none has seen or done before.
In addition to Misawa’s masterpiece “Foot’s Nest,” which won the overall prize at last year’s GLOBAL FOOTWEAR AWARDS, the exhibition will also feature a new work “MASAMUNE,” which is made entirely of copper, based on the theme of Date Masamune, a warlord born in Misawa’s hometown of Sendai. This work was created in collaboration with Mr. Zen Tanaka, the only copper master in Sendai, a new challenge to create shoes using hard, heavy, and non-bending copper, which is the opposite of the flexibility of leather required for ordinary shoes.
The upcoming solo exhibition named “The Contours of Shoes”, will be held at The Arts House, Singapore.
