Open Doors by K.R.santhanakrishnan explores the collective memories of Indian heritage and culture that is rapidly fading away in today’s fast-paced modern world.
Using the facade of a home as his canvas, he recreates the strong tactile feel of old, weathered, dirty plastered walls; with imagery derived from popular culture such as film posters of the 1970s and the ubiquitous images of the goddesses from Raja Ravi Varma calendar art. This becomes a means for the artist to recall his childhood memories of his rural Indian neighbourhood.
The exhibition represents K.R.santhanakrishnan’s 18-year-long obsession and fascination with the door as a symbol and medium – to recall and reflect on heritage for present and future generations.
